Coaching Skills for Parents

Designed by Barefoot Coaching, this online programme draws on all our experience, expertise and knowledge to help parents get the knowledge and understanding they need to be the kind of parent they dream of being.

We have taken coaching principles and psychological theories and applied them to the role of a working parent. Our aim is to help parents recognise and enjoy the responsibility they have, and the difference they can make. There is no role more important than that of being a parent, and no role more challenging!

For organisations, offering your working parents access to this programme can support your diversity and inclusion agenda by acknowledging that your employees have other responsibilities and identities (and therefore feel able to bring their whole self to work) and signals your support for working parents. We have found that participants bring the coaching skills they learn to use at home into the workplace and that happy parents = happy employees.

The programme can be delivered as a whole programme or as stand-alone workshops. Each session lasts for 2 hours (including breaks) and run virtually for up to 8 participants via Zoom. Each session costs £1750 (£8750 for the whole programme):

1. The emotional needs of children; listening with a difference and encouraging children to talk
2. How children make sense of the world; praise and criticism, the labels we give others
3. Understanding children’s behaviour; encouraging positive behaviour and responsibility
4. The family life cycle, the emotional bank account, positions in the family and family meetings
5. Understanding feelings and dealing with guilt

Line Manager Webinars

A line management briefing session provides managers with the opportunity to consider the importance of managing employees through the different stages of parental breaks.

The important role of the line manager in managing their employees through maternity leave should not be under-estimated. Line managers have a real opportunity to support their direct reports as they experience this transition, across three key stages; pre-leave, during-leave and post-leave.

Many women experience stress and anxiety in the run up to their leave as they try to finish their work and prepare for the baby’s arrival. They then feel isolated and invisible during their maternity leave, and can benefit hugely from being connected with their colleagues during ‘Keeping In Touch’ days. And their return to work needs to be sensitively handled in order to ensure you get the best out of them.

This line management briefing sessions provides managers with the opportunity to consider the importance of managing employees through these different stages of maternity leave. The session focuses on practicalities such as managing the transition, getting the best out of ‘Keeping In Touch’ days, providing meaningful work on return to the workplace and increasing understanding of the experience of the new parent-employee. Managers themselves can also benefit from sharing their experiences at this time.

BACK TO WORK

Do you want to get clear on what really matters to you both at work and at home now that you have become a working mum?

You have worked hard to get your career to the point it is at now. Your drive and determination to achieve your professional status is a key part of what makes you, you. You have also just discovered a whole new part of your identity – that of becoming a mother. And, now you are facing the reality of juggling your career ambitions with the desire to be the best mum you can be.

You might be a recent, soon-to-be-returning Mum. Or you could have been back in work a while and are wrestling with the competing demands of your life. Either way you are probably feeling overwhelmed, disconnected with your career, lacking in confidence and unsure how you can make it all work.

Know that you are not alone. Come and find the support and understanding you need in our practical and encouraging online coaching programme with other women feeling just like you!

What is the Back to Work course?

This is a 6-month online coaching programme that will deliver real clarity on what really matters to you, enable you to thrive both at home and at work and confidently embrace your new normal as a professional working mum.

What’s inside the course?

We will create an intimate safe space where you can all get to know each other and actively support each other through the programme and your own individual journeys. No programme will have any more than 8 participants working with Sarah Turner – your maternity coach.

MONTH 1: INTRODUCTIONS
Who are you both as a professional and as a mum?
What does the transition to working mum feel like, and what does it mean to you?

We will take the time to get to know one another and agree how we want to work together and support each other through the programme.

In order to boost your confidence we’ll look at all the knowledge, skills and experience you have gained over the course of your career and as a mother and re-frame all of these so that they are relevant to the workplace.

MONTH 2: WHAT REALLY MATTERS TO YOU?
What is most important to me at this point in my life?

We will explore your values and your priorities now that you are combining your career with your role as a mum. Understanding your purpose and your ‘why’ will help you to set boundaries, express your needs and boost your self-esteem.

MONTH 3: WHAT IS MY NEW IDENTITY NOW, AS A WORKING MUM?
In order to feel connected both at home and at work, how do you need to see yourself?

We’ll explore what has changed for you since having a baby, and make sense of your new dual identities as a professional and as a mother.

We will work through any limiting beliefs (often these can be to do with worrying about what others think of us) and focus on what skills and capabilities you need as you adapt to making sense of the ‘new you’.

MONTH 4: DEVELOPING SELF-AWARENESS AND TAKING CONTROL OF THE GUILT
Why do you feel the way you feel, and react in the way that you do?

Here we will dig a little deeper into how we each see the world differently. Understanding how you became who you are today opens up the possibility to change your response to what is happening.

We’ll explore how the feelings and emotions we experience are underpinned by the way we think and how we attach meaning to events. You’ll learn how you can use the values you identified in month two, to look at things differently and let go of any guilt you may be feeling.

MONTH 5: CONFIDENCE MASTERCLASS
Do you find yourself seeking the approval of others?
How loud is your inner critical voice?

We will take control of that pesky inner critical voice that tells us we are not good enough, don’t know enough or that soon, someone is going to find us out. You’ll learn how to accept and trust yourself so that you can be your authentic self with confidence.

We’ll practice self-compassion and empathy and find ways to build your resilience when you face a set-back.

MONTH 6: YOUR CAREER
How might your priorities shift over time?
What do you really want from your career in the future?

In this final module we’ll examine how what you want and need from your career and your role as a mum might be different over time. We’ll get really clear on your strengths and how you might leverage these in your current role.

We’ll also look ahead and think about the next steps in your career. What skills and experience you need to develop, and how might you plan for another child if this is something you want?

When you join Back to Work you’ll get:

• A pre-programme questionnaire to help you get clear on what you most want to get out of the programme
• 6 live monthly Zoom group coaching calls with Sarah (your maternity coach) and the rest of the group
• Peer coaching in your cohort of 8. You will learn to coach throughout the programme, supporting and encouraging each other as you go on this journey together.
• A private Facebook group for your cohort only. You won’t be doing this work alone, you’ll each be able to share your learning and your challenges between the live coaching calls and find the support and encouragement you need.
• Personal support from Sarah – send me questions any time during the course via WhatsApp and I’ll come back to you as soon as I can. It’s the closest thing to working with me 1-1.

THREE

A new manager wanted to take action following feedback he had received at work. He was keen to improve his reputation, specifically to ensure that other people found him approachable at all times. Exploring how his experience of life had shaped his outlook enabled him to understand how learned behaviours were no longer serving him. He increased his self-awareness and identified ways in which he could manage his inner critical voice. This helped him to soften his approach and develop more emotionally intelligent relationships with his colleagues.
